A job is the accumulation of tasks and responsibilities that a worker assumes within a company. Its fulfillment will be rewarded by means of a salary.


The different types of organizations are formed in such a way that different types of professionals perform their tasks and these, through a previously agreed salary, reward their work.

Characteristics of a job

Regardless of its nature or place in the ladder of a company, each job has some characteristics to highlight:

  • Productive element : The productive factor of work, and therefore labor, are a vital element in production. It also happens with the professional provision of services.
  • Hierarchical situation : Every position is likely to be placed hierarchically. Thus, there are positions that involve responsibility or supervision of other professionals. For the same reason, every worker is likely to have one or more bosses or superiors.
  • Vacancy condition : When a certain position is not covered according to the needs of the organization, it is said that it is a vacant position.
  • Delimitation of tasks : A job position will meet different competencies or obligations that the employee must satisfy as part of their professional activity. The usual thing is that they are presented in labor agreements and employment contracts.
  • Training requirements : For the optimal performance of each position, certain skills or competencies are required.
  • Adapted reward : Each position has a specific salary level for it, taking into account its characteristics. Usually, this salary scale is established through sectoral agreements.

The evolution of the job

The new business environment, marked by new technologies and the emergence of new economic sectors, has facilitated the adoption of new labor practices.

In this sense, the concept of job has been influenced by these new modalities in terms of economic activity. The result of this is the emergence of much more multidisciplinary or multitasking professional disciplines.

Alternatively, the contractual modalities also play a role to be highlighted in this regard. This responds to the practice of outsourcing.

Therefore, it is possible to distinguish both internal and external jobs. The latter are often exercised temporarily or in response to specific campaigns.
