Interpersonal communication is the exchange of messages, as well as information, between two or more individuals. To do this, they use verbal and non-verbal communication, with the aim that there is a good understanding, which helps to understand the message that is being exposed.

Interpersonal communication is the way in which they carry out this communication process. A process in which feelings, data and information are exchanged.

To do this, they make use of verbal and non-verbal communication. When we talk about interpersonal communication, it should be noted that it is carried out between two or more people. In the same way, we must clarify that verbal communication is the one that occurs when we emit sounds in a certain language, while non-verbal communication refers to the one that accompanies the previous one, and occurs as a consequence of the movement of the hands, the posture of the body, as well as all those gestures that have nothing to do with verbal, spoken communication.

Interpersonal communication has great benefits for the human being. People who have this skill highly developed, too, adapt better to any change, while having more satisfactory social relationships.

What elements are involved in interpersonal communication?

Among the elements involved in communication, these are the main ones:

  • Sender and receiver: They could be defined as communicators, since they exchange roles at all times. Sender and receiver are two essential elements. Interpersonal communication takes place between two or more people.
  • Message: It is the information or data that they are exchanging. Messages can be exchanged through verbal or non-verbal communication. The objective, yes, is that it is easily understandable for both.
  • Code : It is a set of elements that are combined following certain rules and that are semantically interpretable, which allows information to be exchanged.
  • Channel: A conversation, a call or sending messages through mobile devices are an example of the channels in which interpersonal communication can be carried out.
  • Context : It is the space where the communicative act takes place. In other words, the set of circumstances that affect both the sender and the receiver, and also condition the interpretation of the message.
  • Feedback: Also known as feedback. It is the exchange of opinions and information that are given during interpersonal communication.

Interpersonal communication is a skill highly required by companies when looking for candidates to fill jobs; usually positions related to business and customer relations.

Among the required skills, the most prominent are shown below:

  • Active listening : Active listening is a highly valued skill. Its objective is based on paying attention to the person who is speaking, not only to respond to him, but also to understand what he is communicating.
  • Body language: Non-verbal communication says much more about oneself than verbal communication. Taking care of the postures, gestures and expressions during a conversation will be of great help to communicate as we wish.
  • Empathy: Putting yourself in the place of the other person, and assessing what they are feeling, will help us understand them much better. In interpersonal communication, empathy is of great help because not only does one think about oneself, but one person is able to understand the position of another.
  • Assertiveness: The way to present an opinion without hurting or offending, but showing an honest position and emphasizing everything that you want to achieve. It will be of great help to maintain optimal interpersonal communication.
